President John Dramani Mahama has warned workers at Ghana’s airports against soliciting tips or begging visitors, cautioning that such conduct damages the country’s image and undermines efforts to project Ghana as a welcoming destination.

President Mahama said every worker and institution operating at the airport has a role to play in shaping the experience of visitors to Ghana, from immigration officers and baggage handlers to transport operators and other service providers.

He made the remarks during the sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of the Multi-Tiered, Multi-Purpose Car Park and Airport Hotels Complex at the Accra International Airport.

According to the President, Ghana’s strategic geographical location gives the country a comparative advantage in aviation, but this advantage must be supported by efficient regulation, strong safety standards, quality customer service, competitive aviation services and reliable ground transportation.

He noted that the welcome visitors receive at immigration, the efficiency of baggage handling, the cleanliness of airport facilities, traffic management and the courtesy of service providers all contribute to their first and last impressions of Ghana.

President Mahama urged airport workers to conduct themselves professionally and ensure that visitors leave the country with positive experiences that encourage them to return.

Meanwhile, President Mahama said the new Multi-Tiered, Multi-Purpose Car Park and Airport Hotels Complex at the Accra International Airport would help ease congestion, improve traffic circulation and maximise the use of limited land within the airport enclave.

He said the seven-storey facility, being developed by the Ghana Airports Company Limited, would provide approximately 2,030 covered parking bays, significantly increasing parking capacity at Terminal 3.
