Upper East Regional Minister commissions 14 boreholes in Kassena-Nankana West

Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Donatus Akamugri Atanga, on Friday commissioned 14 boreholes in the Kassena-Nankana West District as part of his Accounting to the People tour of districts in the region.
The facilities comprise 10 hand-pump boreholes across the district and four mechanised boreholes at Paga Senior High School, Sirigu Senior High School, Chiana Senior High School and the District Assembly.
The minister performed the symbolic commissioning at Paga D/A Primary School, where pupils previously had to leave the school premises to access drinking water during breaks.
“I do not need to belabor the point but all of us know the significance of water in life,” the Regional Minister said. “And if anybody says you have commissioned water sources and they think it is something insignificant he might have underestimated the importance of water in our life.”
The District Chief Executive, Hon. Stephen Aeke Akurugo, said the assembly had earmarked 10 per cent of its District Assembly Common Fund allocation for water provision.
He said the four mechanised boreholes were located at the three senior high schools and the District Assembly, while 10 hand-pump boreholes had been provided across the district.
“We have done four mechanized boreholes. One at Paga Senior High, One at Sirigu Senior high, another at Chiana Senior High and one at the Assembly itself,” he said. “And 10 number boreholes across the district.”
Hon. Akurugo said the commissioning at Paga D/A Primary School represented the formal commissioning of the other hand-pump and mechanised boreholes provided under the intervention.
He said the new facility would address a longstanding difficulty faced by pupils who had to rely on nearby homes and communities for drinking water.
“Paga Primary here, they don’t have any place to go and drink water. Imagine how old Paga Primary is but when they are on break, they have to enter houses and communities to go and drink water,” he said. “So there was the need to get them this borehole,” he said.
