Savelugu Assembly Intensifies sanitation exercise to clear refuse dumps

The Savelugu Municipal Assembly has intensified efforts to improve sanitation in the municipality, clearing refuse dumps at various locations across the Savelugu Township.
The exercise, which began on September 20, 2026, forms part of measures to remove accumulated waste, improve the cleanliness of communities and reduce the risk of sanitation-related diseases, including cholera and malaria.
Speaking during the exercise, the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Alhassan Fuseini Bagaman, said the decision to clear the refuse dumps is part of the Assembly’s broader efforts to protect public health and improve sanitation across the municipality.
He said the accumulation of refuse at some dumping sites had also become a concern to management of the Tamale International Airport, as birds attracted by the waste frequently forage around the airport area, potentially posing a risk to aviation safety.
The MCE disclosed that the Assembly currently has two main dumping sites and will continue to monitor and maintain them to prevent the recurrence of indiscriminate dumping and the associated health and environmental risks.
He called on residents to support the Assembly’s sanitation efforts by disposing of their waste at designated sites and refraining from creating unauthorised dumping grounds.
Mr. Bagaman said the exercise will continue until all identified refuse dumps across the municipality have been cleared.
The intervention is expected to contribute to a cleaner environment, reduce sanitation-related health risks and improve the general outlook of communities within the Savelugu Municipality.
