The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Yendi, Hon. Sugri Muniru, has held a crucial meeting with the management of the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) to address persistent power challenges affecting residents and businesses in the municipality.

The meeting, held at the Municipal Chief Executive’s Office, was attended by heads of municipal departments, Assembly Members and a delegation from NEDCo led by the Area Manager.

Key issues discussed included frequent unannounced power outages, low voltage in some parts of the municipality, faulty and overloaded transformers, delays in responding to faults and customer complaints, as well as concerns regarding streetlight maintenance and billing.

Hon. Sugri Muniru expressed deep concern about the negative impact of the persistent power challenges on security, healthcare delivery, education and small businesses within the municipality.

He called on NEDCo to improve its communication with the public, particularly regarding planned outages and maintenance works.

NEDCo management attributed the challenges to overloaded transformers, illegal electricity connections and ongoing maintenance works.

The company assured the Municipal Assembly that technical teams would be immediately deployed to assess and repair faulty transformers, while efforts would also be made to improve the fault-reporting system and ensure a more timely response to customer complaints.

Both parties agreed to establish a joint monitoring committee and hold monthly review meetings until the power situation in the municipality is stabilised.

Hon. Sugri Muniru assured residents that the Municipal Assembly remains committed to working closely with NEDCo to ensure a reliable and stable power supply for the people of Yendi.
