Lamashegu chief urges pupils to embrace Reading

The Chief of Lamashegu, Lamashee-Naa Iddrisu Mahama, has urged pupils to develop a strong reading culture, describing reading as a foundation for academic achievement and future success.
He made the call when he joined pupils and teachers of the Lamashegu Cluster of Schools to participate in the Ghana Library Authority’s Reading Promotion Event 2026 in Lamashegu, Tamale.
The event, held under the theme, “Literacy for People, the Planet and Prosperity: Building a Reading Ghana,” formed part of activities marking International Literacy Day.
Addressing the pupils, teachers and officials from the Ghana Library Authority, Lamashee-Naa Iddrisu Mahama expressed concern over the growing amount of time children spend on mobile phones and games, urging them to devote more time to reading books.
He said reading opens opportunities and equips children with the knowledge needed to achieve their aspirations, whether in leadership, medicine, education or traditional leadership.
The Chief commended the Ghana Library Authority for bringing the reading promotion programme to Lamashegu and appealed for more reading materials and the establishment of a library facility in the community to support literacy development among children.
Officials of the Ghana Library Authority said the Reading Promotion Event 2026 forms part of a nationwide campaign to revive the culture of reading among basic school pupils and contribute to building a reading Ghana.
The pupils participated in reading competitions, spelling and storytelling activities, demonstrating their literacy skills and promoting the importance of reading.
The programme was attended by chiefs, teachers, parents and officials from the Tamale Metropolitan Education Directorate.
