The Head of the Local Government Service, Professor Lord Kwaku Mensah, has paid a courtesy call on the Kampakuya Naa, Abukari Yakubu, at the Gbewa Palace in Yendi as part of his five-day working tour of the Northern Region.

Professor Mensah, who was accompanied by the Acting Chief Director of the Northern Regional Coordinating Council, Mr. Sumaila Ewuntomah Abudu, visited the palace on Thursday, October 8, 2026, to engage the traditional authority and strengthen collaboration between the Local Government Service and traditional institutions in the region.

During the visit, Professor Mensah congratulated Kampakuya Naa Abukari Yakubu on his enskinment as Regent of Dagbon and commended him for his leadership and commitment to the development and wellbeing of the people.

He explained that his tour was aimed at engaging local government authorities, staff and other stakeholders on measures to improve the effectiveness of local governance and service delivery.

Professor Mensah said the tour also provided an opportunity to interact directly with management and staff of the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to better understand their challenges and identify areas requiring attention to improve local government administration.

Welcoming the delegation, Kampakuya Naa Abukari Yakubu expressed appreciation to Professor Mensah for the visit, describing it as an important gesture that underscored the need for closer collaboration between traditional authorities and the Local Government Service.

The Kampakuya Naa appealed to the Head of the Local Government Service to advocate for adequate resources for Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies in the Northern Region to enable them to effectively deliver on their development responsibilities.

He said the ability of the Assemblies to provide essential services and implement development projects depended largely on adequate financial, human and logistical resources.

Kampakuya Naa Abukari Yakubu therefore called for continued efforts to strengthen the resource base of the Assemblies, particularly those operating in deprived and hard-to-reach communities, to enable them to respond effectively to the development needs of their respective areas.

He further urged Professor Mensah to support initiatives aimed at engaging the youth in productive activities, warning that rising incidents of drug abuse, drug trafficking and other forms of youth-related social vices posed a threat to the future of young people.

He called for coordinated interventions involving government institutions, traditional authorities and other stakeholders to address the challenges confronting the youth.

In response, Professor Mensah thanked the Kampakuya Naa for the concerns raised and reiterated the commitment of the Local Government Service to strengthening local governance and improving service delivery at the local level.

The Acting Chief Director of the Northern Regional Coordinating Council, Mr. Sumaila Ewuntomah Abudu, on behalf of Professor Mensah and the delegation, also expressed appreciation to the Kampakuya Naa for the warm reception.

He said the Northern Regional Coordinating Council valued its partnership with traditional authorities and assured the palace of the Council's continued support and collaboration towards advancing development in the Northern Region.

The courtesy call formed part of Professor Mensah's broader five-day tour of the Northern Region, during which he is engaging management and staff of various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies on professionalism, effective service delivery, human resource management and the need to strengthen local government administration.
