Gushegu District: Police arrest two suspects over murder of Yidani Chief and son

The Northern Regional Police Command has arrested two suspects in connection with the murder of the Chief of Yidani, Naa Ntimla Nwenisim, and his son, Ntimla Bilaga, at Yidani in the Gushegu District of the Northern Region.
The suspects, identified as 25-year-old Majejiba Magne and 34-year-old Haruna Nlegle, were arrested following intelligence received by the Police on August 26, 2026.
According to a statement issued by the Northern Regional Police Command, the two were allegedly travelling from Dombine in the Gushegu District towards Chereponi when the Police acted on the intelligence.
The Gushegu Police subsequently alerted the Chereponi District Police Command, which intercepted and arrested the suspects.
The two suspects were later transported by a Police team from Gushegu to the Yendi Divisional Police Command on August 27, where they were remanded into Police custody to assist with investigations.
The arrests follow the gruesome killing of the Yidani Chief and his son on August 14, 2026.
Police said they received information at about 3:00 a.m. that three unidentified armed men had attacked the Chief's residence and shot him and his son.
Police personnel immediately proceeded to the community, secured the crime scene and commenced investigations.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the armed assailants allegedly entered the compound and demanded to be directed to the Chief's room.
When their demand was refused, the suspects reportedly fired into the roof of a nearby room before proceeding to the Chief's room, where they forcibly gained entry and shot the Chief and his son.
Police recovered five empty BB cartridges from the scene, which were secured as exhibits.
The bodies of the Chief and his son were subsequently conveyed to the Tamale Teaching Hospital for preservation and post-mortem examination.
A post-mortem examination conducted on August 17 by a pathologist at the Tamale Teaching Hospital indicated that both victims suffered multiple injuries consistent with a shotgun assault and died from severe injuries and haemorrhagic shock.
Following the incident, the Inspector-General of Police deployed a special operations team from the National Police Headquarters to support investigations and security operations in the area.
Patrols and other security operations have also been intensified in Yidani and neighbouring communities.
The Northern Regional Security Council, led by the Regional Minister, also visited the community to engage the bereaved family and residents and reassure them of the government's commitment to ensuring justice.
The Northern Regional Police Command has assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that all available leads are being pursued to identify and arrest any other persons who may have been involved in the murders.
The Police have appealed to residents of Yidani, Dombine, Gushegu, Chereponi and surrounding communities to provide credible information that could assist with investigations.
The Command also appealed to the bereaved family, youth and residents to remain calm and refrain from acts of reprisal or vigilantism, stressing that anyone found culpable would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
