Staff of GCB Bank PLC in Tamale have supported the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the Tamale Teaching Hospital with medical equipment and consumables to help improve the care of sick and premature newborns.

The donation was made under the GCB Staff Community Impact Programme and forms part of efforts by staff of the bank to respond to critical needs within communities and healthcare institutions.

Items presented to the NICU included suction machines, pulse oximeters, oxygen flow meters, a vein finder and other essential medical consumables. The equipment is expected to enhance the unit’s capacity to provide timely and effective care to vulnerable newborns.

Receiving the items on behalf of the management of the Tamale Teaching Hospital and staff of the NICU, Dr. Fathea Bani expressed appreciation to GCB Bank PLC for extending its corporate social responsibility efforts to newborn care.

She said investing in neonatal healthcare was an investment in the future of the country, stressing that newborns require critical care and support to survive complications associated with premature birth and other medical conditions.

Dr. Fathea noted that the donated equipment and consumables would support healthcare professionals in delivering quality care to babies admitted to the unit. She also appealed to other organisations and individuals to support the NICU, stressing that every contribution, regardless of its size, could help save lives.

She said, “We don't see anything as small; anything that will help us to save a single baby's life is a big thing.”

The donation comes at a crucial time for the NICU, which admitted approximately 700 babies between January and August this year. The increasing number of admissions has placed additional demands on the unit and its healthcare professionals.

The new equipment is therefore expected to strengthen the unit’s capacity to respond promptly to the needs of critically ill newborns and improve the quality of neonatal care provided at the Tamale Teaching Hospital.

The initiative by GCB Bank PLC has been welcomed as a meaningful contribution to efforts to improve healthcare outcomes for newborns in the Northern Region.
