The Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) has engaged journalists in Tamale on the regulation of political party and campaign financing in Ghana, with a focus on strengthening transparency and accountability in the country’s democratic processes.

The media workshop, held on Thursday, August 27, 2026, provided journalists with an overview of the current state of political party and campaign financing, including challenges and gaps in the existing legal and regulatory framework.

Participants were also introduced to the government’s position on recommendations by the Constitutional Review Commission on political financing, as well as key provisions contained in the Draft Model Political Finance Law. The workshop featured expert presentations, interactive discussions and question-and-answer sessions.

Speaking to the media after the workshop, a lecturer at the University for Development Studies (UDS), Professor Iliasu Mumuni, commended journalists and media practitioners for their efforts in holding people in positions of authority accountable.

Professor Mumuni said the media have a crucial responsibility to ensure that political appointees, government officials, traditional leaders and other community leaders account for the trust and responsibilities entrusted to them by the people.

He, however, noted that some journalists sometimes hesitate to ask critical accountability questions due to fear, uncertainty, pressure and the influence of powerful individuals and institutions, warning that such challenges could undermine Ghana’s democracy and deprive the public of vital information.

Professor Mumuni therefore urged journalists to strengthen their watchdog role by asking relevant and critical questions while remaining balanced, professional, ethical and objective.

He stressed the need for media practitioners to conduct thorough research, rely on credible data and approach issues from an informed position to ensure that their reporting contributes meaningfully to public accountability and democratic development without fear or political influence.
